Luminate Therapy accepts cash, HSA/FSA cards, credit cards (American Express, Discover, Mastercard, Visa) at the time of the appointment. I do not bill insurance. However, I provide you with a superbill at the end of each month that you can submit to your insurance company. Before booking an appointment, we suggest calling the number on the back of your insurance card inquiring about your “out of network” therapy benefits and learning about how to submit an out-of-network reimbursement claim.
Why I don’t take insurance:
Throughout my decade as therapist, I have previously accepted payment from health insurers. Health insurance restrictions and limitations on relationship, couples therapy, and marriage counseling prevents me from collaborating with my clients on the best treatment and restricts the interventions couples need to make a relationship improve and work.
Working extensively with couples, I have found that longer sessions beyond the traditional 50 minute sessions limited by insurance are most effective. Insurance no longer covers services beyond 50 minutes. Further, using insurance requires that I diagnose one of you with a mental health disorder, which leaves the other to support your mental health by joining you in session. This is truly not couples or dyadic work in therapy. It isn’t fair to diagnose for the purpose of insurance and isn’t helpful to the work as a couple. It is not necessary that we diagnose you with a mental disorder (unless you use out of network benefits).
Deciding to end my contracts with insurance has led me up to connect with clients without the restrictions they place on therapist, and we are able to be more focused on you as people, your relationship, and effectively use evidence-based therapy.
I suggest contacting your health care insurance to confirm whether or not you have “out-of-network” mental health coverage. If you do have coverage, I can send you a receipt of services (also known as a “superbill”) which you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement of all or a portion of what you pay out of pocket for therapy.
These are some questions you can ask your insurance provider:
1) Do I have out of network mental health benefits?
2) If yes, what % of the cost do you reimburse?
3) Is there a deductible I need to meet before I get reimbursed?
4) If yes, what is the deductible amount?
5) How many sessions per year are covered?
6) How and where do I submit a superbill?
Clients are responsible for the fees at the time of their appointment, so I encourage you to verify your out-of-network benefits with your insurance company prior to your first session.
Insurance can feel confusing. Let me know if you have questions about the out-of-network process, we would love to take the time help you understand your insurance and how to get reimbursed.

Depending on your goals and treatment plan, upfront it is common for us to meet weekly to build momentum in change. When we feel it is natural to start spreading out appointments, we will collaborate this process until the discharge of therapy. Of course, this is your time, and if you feel weekly is not feasible, let’s talk, I’m open to hearing about your process.

You have the Right to Receive a Good Faith Estimate of Expected Charges Under the No Surprises Act. You are entitled to receive a Good Faith Estimate of what the charges could be for couples therapy services provided to you. While it is not possible for a therapist to know, in advance, how may sessions my be necessary or appropriate for a given couple, this form provides an estimate of the cost of services that may be provided. Your total cost of services will depend on the number of sessions you attend, your individual circumstances, and the type and amount of services provided to you. The estimate is not a contract and does not obligate you to obtain any services from the provider listed, nor does it include services rendered to you that are not identified here.
The Good Faith Estimate is not intended to serve as a recommendation for treatment or a prediction that you may need to attend a specified number of therapy sessions. The number of sessions that are appropriate in your case, and the estimated cost of those services, depends on your needs and what you agree to in consultation with your therapist. You are entitled to disagree with any recommendations made to you concerning your treatment and you may discontinue to end treatment at any time.
This Good Faith Estimate shows the costs of items and services that are reasonably expected for your health care needs for an item or service. The estimate is based on information known at the time the estimate was created, and does not include any unknown or unexpected costs that may arise during treatment.
Please contact us or let your provider know if you want to receive your Good Faith Estimate in paper form.
